OVERVIEW
THEME
Research Complexity and Emerging Trends in Language, Linguistics and Society
ICLALIS 2024
The 4th International Conference on Language, Linguistics and Society (ICLALIS 2024) aims to highlight discussions and discovery regarding the complex nature of research affecting language, linguistics, and society. In light of recent worldwide events, scholars have had to recalibrate their research foci in the areas of language, linguistics, and society. This has inadvertently led to the emergence of novel and creative research views and approaches. Recognizing the significance of this trend, ICLALIS 2024 aspires to bring together local and international scholars to engage in high-level academic exchange that results in impactful contributions not only to academia but to their communities.

Associate Professor Dr. Barry Lee Reynolds
Associate Professor of English Language Education in the Faculty of Education
at the University of Macau
He conducts interdisciplinary research that span the fields of Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, English Language Teaching, and Educational Technology. He researches language problems and language use with the aims of providing results that can be practically applied to language syllabus design, language planning, language learning, classroom teaching, and other related areas. His experimental research often questions established second language research methodologies to further elevate the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. More specifically, he is concerned with how second language vocabulary learning and teaching can enhance second language literacy acquisition and he has published extensively on how the intentional teaching of vocabulary in the classroom should be complemented by incidental learning of vocabulary outside the classroom through extensive reading, digital game play, and other media consumption.
Recognizing that the incidental acquisition of vocabulary is a dynamic process, he has begun to use cognitive science data collection techniques such as eye-tracking to further the understanding of how vocabulary learning occurs incrementally. He is also concerned with how the written corrective feedback administered by English language teachers can be harnessed to enhance the lexical complexity and the idiomaticity of students’ second language writing. He has conducted research that has used game-based learning, educational technology, and corpora to understand how retention of lexis and grammar can be enhanced through the combination of teacher instruction and written corrective feedback. His research not only focuses on the role of the language teacher but also the language learner, exploring how learning strategies, metacognition, and language awareness can also affect language learning outcomes. He has published extensively on these topics and his most recently edited work is Vocabulary Learning in the Wild (Springer, 2023).
